The sun rose over the tree line, over the still and gray house with its leaning porch, and for a few minutes sprayed the little neighborhood with crisp, warm light that sparkled the snow and drove steam from the different wood surfaces. Then the clouds gathered together and hid the sun.
Wiki had been instructed to stay on the couch facing the windows and to not turn around. She could hear Seabee and Sara chatting and laughing and playfully arguing. Beaver could also be heard, squeaking from the guest bathroom.
âCover your eyes!â Seabee called.
Wiki did so. âCan I get up?â
âNow you can, but keep âem closed,â Sara told her.
Wiki stood, closed her eyes and turned to the length of the front room, tracing their voices by sweeping her head.
âOkay,â Seabee told her.
âStart at the feet,â Sara added.
âYou got it,â Wiki slid her hands from before her eyes and saw Seabee beside Sara in the foyer. She lowered her gaze and took in the glossy black patent leather shoes. Elevating her gaze, she saw the black silk dress hem crossing Seabeeâs shins at a stylish, right to left cut. Her right white shoulder was bareâthe dress crossing her chest and continuing over her left shoulder at the same angle as the hem, a wing tip formed by the padding.
Her baby was wearing make-up. Subtle shades and hues that warmed her eyes and suggested thinner cheeks. Her hair style was false casual: a bun at the back and locks falling forward in careless strands of chaos.
So far, Wiki had not said a word. She took in her daughterâs pleased, warm eyes and smile.
âIâm a beautiful,â she called to Wiki.
âYes. Yes, you are. Always.â She blew a kiss to Sara, standing off to the side, âWell done, love.â
Sara had a mist, a gleam, in her eyes and in rare form, didnât offer a quip. Beaver squeaked and Seabee headed for the guest bath as Wiki crossed and entered Saraâs offered arms. She pulled her close and kissed her cheek, feeling Sara smooth her rear through the light flannel of her napping dress. Wiki smiled within the honey scent of Saraâs hair and the warmth and taste of her neck.
The squeaking stopped and Seabee could be heard questioning Beaver. The two women stepped apart and went to go see what was up.
Before they reached the door, Seabee exited with a damp, content Beaver in her arms. Sara went for a towel and Wiki held Beaver to her chest while Seabee dried the front of her dress. Twenty minutes later, the pet was back in his den and Wiki and Seabee had pulled on their winter coats.

The kindergarten teacher opened the classroom door dramatically slow and led the eleven boys and girls out into the schoolyard. Two boys exited first. Their clothing was torn and bloodied, their eyes dark circled and their teeth were gnashing as they extended their arms straight and zombie-walked out into the gently falling snow. There were two deer hunters dressed in full camouflageâeven their faces painted with swipes of green and brown.
